New Solution Guide – Disaster Recovery of Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and SharePoint using VMware SRM, NetApp, and Cisco

Posted by Abhinav Joshi – Reference Architect (Server and Desktop Virtualization)

I am happy to share with you that a new tri-branded Cisco, NetApp, VMware solution guide highlighting automated disaster recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and SharePoint using VMware SRM, NetApp SnapManager/SnapMirror, and Cisco Nexus is now available. The key focus of this solution guide is to highlight the architecture and validation of automated recovery of virtualized Microsoft Applications mixed workload across both the Fibre Channel and Ethernet (iSCSI, NFS) based solutions. It extends the joint Microsoft Apps on Cisco, NetApp, and VMware solution guide that we discussed earlier here and here.

The key highlights of the solution are:
  • Microsoft applications virtualization with VMware vSphere 4
  • Microsoft applications disaster recovery with VMware SRM and application consistency with NetApp SnapManager and SnapMirror products
  • Cisco Nexus Unified Fabric (10Gb Ethernet, and 4Gb FC)
  • Storage efficiency with NetApp primary storage deduplication, FlexClone, thin provisioning, without any negative trade-offs
  • Efficient WAN acceleration with deduplication-aware built in NetApp SnapMirror compression
  • Integrated, storage-efficient DR testing with NetApp FlexClone as highlighted in the figure below

In addition, the solution guide provides best practices for both the scenarios where the VMs are allowed (stretched VLANs) and not allowed (independent VLANs) to maintain the same IP addresses once they are failed over from the protected site to the recovery site.

Please note that the AD/DNS architecture plays a very important role in successful failover, DR test, and failback scenarios; otherwise it can result in USN rollback scenario with corrupt AD database. Procedures that should be followed to avoid such situations for both the DR test and real failover scenarios are described in details in this solution guide.

Special thanks to the VMware / Cisco / Microsoft solution teams for their efforts during every phase of this project.

As always, we would highly appreciate any feedback or comments you may have.

Really nice guide!!

The only problem is that I'm not able to find the Disaster Recovery Unified Adapter 1.4.3 on the netapp or vmware site ... anyone know where to find it?

We're in the middle of a disaster recovery project and being able to do some testing before going in production will be really useful.

Hi Francesco,
Thats a great question. The Unified Adapter should be available for download beginning of April 2010.

Thanks for the feedback on the solution guide. Customer feedback really helps enhance our solution offering.

Regards,

Abhinav
